How to Maintain Your Air Conditioner

Regular cleaning and maintenance is a necessity for all air ventilation systems, especially if you do not want to end up with a HVAC repair on your hands. For this purpose, you may choose to hire a professional technician who can provide you with air conditioning services, including regular maintenance. Alternatively, you may want to service your air conditioner on your own to avoid a costly repair in the future.

If you have decided to choose the do it yourself option, here is how you can maintain your air conditioner in the best manner:

Plan your schedule

The best time to service your HVAC system is to do it before it is actually required. Thus, plan a regular maintenance schedule and follow it accordingly. If you are unable to service the unit on a particular day, for whatever the reason, schedule it for the following day, but make sure you do not continuously delay the schedule as a habit.

Change your filter

All purification and ventilation systems are fitted with filters. If you have swimming pool in your home, you are probably aware of the fact that filters catch a lot of dust, dirt, and debris within them. Occasionally, they can be cleaned once a week to retain the proper functioning of the filter. However, after a longer duration, you will need to replace and change your filter so that it can continue to work efficiently.

As with your pool, the air conditioning system is also equipped with a filter. This is why you need to follow the maintenance steps mentioned above to replace the filters in your ventilation system at least once a month, especially if you are frequently using your air conditioner.

Clean your drain

Air conditioning units release water when they are operational. This water is usually discharged outside the house with the help of a drainpipe that is connected to your unit. With time, the drainpipe becomes clogged with dust and dirt, and if you do not clean it, it may become clogged.

A clogged drainpipe prevents water from flowing out of the pipe, with the result that the water reverses directions and flows out of the air ducts of your air conditioner. Hence, you need to clear the drainpipe to avoid the wastewater backing into your home.

To do this, cap the end of the drainpipe that is located within the home and use a power vacuum hose to suck the dirt out of the pipe from the other end. Remember to remove the pipe’s cap once you are finished with the cleaning.

Wash the coils

Although this part of the cleaning may be dangerous if not performed carefully, it is a prerequisite if you want to avoid an air conditioner repair. Thus, for this step, you need to disconnect your unit and then wet its coils with water from a hose. Use an air conditioner cleaner t o spray the entire area that you want to clean. Then leave it aside for a little while and then spray it once more with water using a hose.

You can use the above given methods to clean and maintain your air conditioner in the best way, or you may hire an air conditioner contractor to provide you with maintenance services.
