Tips on Getting Energy Efficient Air Conditioners

Tired of paying for your air conditioner repairs? Considering replacing your unit with a more energy efficient model?

Energy efficient air conditioning units consume less energy while providing you with perfect cooling and comfort. Thus, if you are eager to avoid HVAC repairs, it is ideal to install a system that will perform to its maximum potential and provide you with good outcomes.

Here are two of the basic things that you should consider when you are planning to install or purchase an energy efficient air conditioner for your home:

The Age of the Air Conditioner

If you are buying a new model, you can rest assured that it will have a life span of around 10 to 15 years, providing you with perfect functioning for days to come. However, if you are on a budget, you may be considering the purchase of a second hand air conditioner and this is when the age of the unit becomes very important.

Ideally, air conditioners can function properly for around 15 to 20 years at maximum, after which time, they must be replaced. Hence, for used air conditioning systems, you must make sure that the system is not too worn, as the older it becomes, the less energy efficient it will be. If you are unable to determine a fixed age of the unit, prefer to buy a new one, which may cost you more, but will be under a warranty while providing optimum cooling.

The Ratings of the Unit

There are three key ratings that you need to check before buying your new air conditioner. The first is the cooling capacity, expressed as Btu, or British Thermal Unit. This rating determines the cooling output of your chosen system.

The other two ratings are SEER and EER, both of which are similar but yet stand for different estimates. Te SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which sets a standard performance level for the system, throughout the year, based on one particular location. The EER, however, stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio and expresses the ratio between the energy consumed and output produced by the unit.

EER and SEER are good measures of the unit’s efficiency and must be evaluated with care to determine the expense of the air conditioning system over time. On the other hand, Btu is mostly determined depending upon the size of your living space. If you are installing a unit with a low Btu into a large room, the cooling may not be as sufficient as it will be in a smaller area.

Both of the factors given above will help you in finding the right air conditioner for your home. Although you may be worried about the costs of the installation, it will rid you of the frequent repairs and air conditioner service that you have been paying for.
